TUMMY TUCK (Abdominoplasty)
An abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to improve the contour of the abdomen. It is commonly performed to counteract the effects of aging, after weight loss, or after pregnancy. Often it can be combined with another procedure such as a breast lift or breast augmentation. A consultation with Dr. Dec will help determine if you are an appropriate candidate for an abdominoplasty and help you understand the risks and benefits of surgery.
During an abdominoplasty excess skin and fat are removed from your lower abdomen and the remaining skin and belly button are repositioned. The incision is designed to hide in your undergarment; its length depends on how much tissue needs to be removed. The abdominal muscles can be tightened during the procedure to restore a more slender waistline. The procedure takes approximately three hours.
After surgery your abdomen will feel tender. Dr. Dec will prescribe medications to reduce pain and risk of infection. You should expect to have drains after surgery. Most patients leave the hospital the same day and are then cared for by a private duty nurse until the next day.
Bruising and swelling around the abdomen are normal and usually take two to three weeks to resolve. Scars soften and fade over the course of several months. You may resume mild activities the day after surgery and strenuous activities after six weeks. You will see an improved abdominal contour immediately after surgery, which will continue to improve as you heal.
