Skin Sparing Mastectomy

A skin sparing mastectomy removes the nipple and areola with the entire breast gland, but preserves the maximum amount of skin.  Preserving skin results in the best reconstructive outcomes when immediate breast reconstruction is performed. 

A skin sparing mastectomy can be reconstructed by a plastic surgeon using breast implants or natural tissues from other parts of your body.

 

Nipple Sparing Mastectomy

A nipple sparing mastectomy removes the breast gland, but preserves the nipple areola, and all of the breast skin.  Preserving these critical structures has the potential for the best aesthetic reconstructive outcomes when immediate breast reconstruction is performed.  Because the nipple is left in place a small volume of duct cells will remain in the breast.  The breast surgeon and plastic surgeon have to agree that you are a good candidate for a nipple sparing mastectomy both from an oncologic and a reconstructive standpoint.

 

Prophylactic Mastectomy

A prophylactic mastectomy removes one or both breasts to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer.  Typically women consider prophylactic mastectomy for several reasons:

 

• Already have cancer in one breas

• Have a strong family history of breast cancer

• Are carriers of the BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 gene mutation

• Have been diagnosed with lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS)
