Mutations in the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 genes impair your body’s ability to repair DNA and put you at a higher risk for developing breast and ovarian cancer.  Following a discussion with your geneticist, gynecologist, and breast surgeon you may elect to undergo a bilateral prophylactic mastectomy and removal of ovaries.  Although the technical aspect of performing breast reconstruction in women with BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 mutations are similar to those without the mutation, there are special considerations when planning the timing of the breast reconstruction with the timing of removing the ovaries.  In many instances the procedures can be combined to decrease the total number of operations that you will need to undergo.
